As part of my series of interviews about “5 things you need to know to create a very successful podcast”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil.

Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil is a dual board-certified dermatologist with offices in New York City and Long Island. He is listed in the Castle Connolly guide of top doctors and was selected as New York Super Doctor. He is on the teaching faculty at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, actively involved in the education of medical students and resident physicians. Dr. Mudgil is routinely featured in the press and has appeared on/in CBS, FOX, NBC, YAHOO!, New York Magazine, Oprah Magazine, Men’s Health, Bustle, Refinery 29, and Well + Good to name a few. As the host of The Dr. Mudgil Podcast, which is available in audio and video formats wherever you listen to your podcasts, Dr.Mudgil interviews different personalities who have achieved success in their own charted ways. He is currently in the process of finishing his first book, “LET’S GET IT! Hustle and Grind Your Way to Personal Empowerment.”

Can you tell us a bit of your “personal backstory? What is your background, and what eventually brought you to this particular career path?

I come from a family of doctors. In my mother’s eyes, there was no other acceptable career path for my older brother or me. We both obliged, and fortunately, we couldn’t be happier in our careers. After building two successful offices by the age of 42, I felt the need for more. Namely, to touch others with positivity and encourage self-empowerment on a broader scale. After all, if I could accomplish what I had from my very humble beginnings, anyone could, as long as they’re willing to put in the work. I turned to social media to actuate this newfound passion and started my podcast!

Can you share a story about the most interesting thing that has happened to you since you started podcasting?

It’s incredible to me how my podcast has taken on a life of its own. I just recorded my 34th episode and couldn’t be prouder of the catalog I’ve created. I’m so grateful for the generosity of my guests who share themselves with me and my audience. I love when strangers or my patients refer to something one of my guests said that moved them. It still blows my mind and validates that I’m on the right path. After all, spreading positivity and inspiring is what it’s all about!

Can you share a story about the biggest or funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson or takeaways you learned from that?

The podcast is constantly evolving, particularly when it comes to tweaking the A/V aspect. My fourth podcast was with NFL great Erik Coleman. We decided to record the video with a green screen behind us. What a mistake! It was a fantastic podcast in terms of content, but I cringe when I view the video, which looks like a criminal interrogation.

How long have you been podcasting, and how many shows have you aired?

In August, I will have been podcasting for two years. I’ve recorded 34 episodes so far.

What are the main takeaways, lessons, or messages that you want your listeners to walk away with after listening to your show?

Most of my podcasts feature individuals whose stories I find inspiring. Hearing an inspiring story is empowering. One just can’t hear enough of these. I hope my listeners walk away inspired and empowered to grind for their goals. My first episode was with my mother.

My mom was a VA doctor and a Colonel in the US Army Reserve (where she served as a doctor). She actually could have been a General, but feared the administrative burden associated with that rank. Now, as an adult and parent myself, her story resonates with me and inspires me daily. I’m so incredibly touched that it inspires so many of my listeners as well. My goal has always been to uncover a guest’s true passion and drive so that we, as the listener, can evolve and grow.

Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil of The Dr. Mudgil Podcast shares the best ways to:

1) Book Great Guests. reach out personally. Don’t rely on your publicist or assistant. Folks, especially notable ones in high demand, appreciate hearing from you directly. Also, don’t be afraid to ask — there may be people in your ear telling not to shoot for the stars — they are wrong, ignore them.

2) Increase Listeners. and encourage engagement, cross-pollinate on other social media platforms. Use Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok to increase the breadth of your platform.

3) Produce in a Professional Way. If you have the resources, hire someone who knows what they’re doing to help produce the audio/video.

4) Encourage Engagement. I’m VERY active on Instagram and TikTok, and a verified “influencer” on both platforms. My account is growing as I resonate with different people for different reasons.

5) Monetize. I have a full-time media professional on my team to help me create content that can be scaled.
